1. Determine your approach
Invest in individual stocks if you have time and desire to do the research, otherwise invest in index funds, like the S&P 500 and others.

2. Decide how much you will invest in stocks
Don’t invest money that you will need in a short-term. Make sure you have an emergency fund first, because investing is a marathon, not a sprint.

3. Open an investment account
To invest in stocks, you need a brokerage account, to open which is generally easy, just find the right one for you in terms of costs and features.

4. Choose your stocks
Here are the important concepts to keep in mind:
• Diversify your portfolio
• Invest in businesses you understand
• Avoid high-volatility stocks, and penny stocks
• Learn the basic to evaluate stocks

5. Continue investing
The biggest secret of investing is to buy shares of great businesses at reasonable prices and hold on to them for as long as they remain great. If you do this, over time you’ll produce excellent investment returns.
