MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program

MedStar Georgetown is the leader within the field of DBS. We’re the very first center recognized as a center of excellence in the whole Washington, DC area for our care of people with Parkinson’s disease. We have a multidisciplinary team that is uniquely suited to treat patients with movement disorders.

Neurology has really turned into a field where we can really be hands on and intervene and modify diseases and improve quality of lives.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a surgery that consists of placing electrodes in a very precise manor and different target areas of the brain and then connecting those electrodes to what we would call an IPG, which is a brain pacemaker, similar to a cardiac pacemaker. It sits in a small soft tissue pocket overlying the patient’s chest.

It’s a real exciting field to be in and I really see that when I get to see a patient come in who is in a wheelchair and the next visit they’re walking. That’s pretty amazing.
